Aides with: immunity protection, destroying free radicals in the body, heart protection, skin protection, and inflammation

Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) is the dark purple berry of the elder tree, which grows in the warmer parts of Europe, North America, Asia, and Northern Africa.  Traditionally, Native Americans used it to treat infections, while the ancient Egyptians used it to improve their complexions and heal burns. It is still gathered and used in folk medicine across many parts of Europe.

-Elderberry has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in reducing the symptoms of influenza (the flu), especially when taken within 48 hours from the onset of symptoms.

-Elderberry fruit contains high levels of flavonoids (compounds found naturally in plants), which might have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties—this help to protect healthy cells from harmful free radicals that play a role in skin problems.

-Elderberries contain high levels of vitamin A. This vitamin A gives elderberries the capability to soothe the skin and ease the appearance of age spots and wrinkles.

Avoid If: You have an autoimmune disease, such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis. Elderberries may increase the activity of your immune system.

Caution: Elderberry is possibly unsafe when uncooked leaves, stems, or fruit are consumed. The elderberry plant contains a chemical that produces cyanide in the leaves or other plant parts and the unripe green fruit. If consumed in large quantities, this can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or more severe side effects.

As with every herb, please do your research before use.
